You Find Out In The Argument
· Unique Soul
You never really know somebody until you’ve had a problem with them. Not even a big blowup. Just real friction. The first actual disagreement.
Up until then you’re pretty much just seeing the version of them that shows up on a good day. Easy. Agreeable. Fun to be around. That version’s real. It’s just not the whole person, and it was never gonna be the part that told you anything.
Conflict pulls the rest of them into view. How they talk when they’re uncomfortable. Whether they get quiet or get loud. Whether they’re actually listening or just waiting for their turn to talk. Whether they can say “I was wrong” without it costing them their whole identity.
Some people are the best actors you’ll ever meet, right up until it’s time to actually deal with something. Charming the whole way through, until the conversation gets hard, and all of a sudden they got somewhere else to be.
Learned more about somebody in one hard conversation than in months of easy ones. You find out real quick if they can stay in the room when it’s tense, or if they would rather disappear and hope it works itself out without them.
None of this means you go looking for conflict. It just means it tells the truth faster than anything else does. Compatibility on a good day doesn’t tell you much. Compatibility on a hard day tells you almost everything.
So now when that first real disagreement shows up, I actually pay attention. Not to win it. Just to see who’s really standing there.
