The Gap Between Wanting and Doing
· Unique Soul
I’ve been abstaining from all of it. The things I used to reach for on autopilot. Stimulation, escape, distraction, comfort, whatever the moment called for.
Stepping away from that has made my own patterns so much clearer. I didn’t realize how much noise those vices were making until I took them out.
The discipline part is what’s catching me off guard. It’s not about becoming some restrictive version of myself… nah. It’s learning I can want something and not act on it. That gap between desire and action is huge. I didn’t know how big it was until I started living inside it. Once you realize you can sit with an urge without automatically feeding it, that skill starts bleeding into everything else.
I’m noticing things now. I was using certain vices to avoid feeling. I’m seeing which habits were actually pleasure and which ones were just compulsive. My environment influences my behavior more than I ever realized. My choices are becoming more intentional. I catch myself negotiating with myself instead of actually making a decision. And I’m starting to know what I actually want when I’m not constantly chasing that stimulation.
Not “can I stop doing this” anymore, but more like why was I doing it in the first place? Who am I when I don’t need it?
Still figuring that part out.
