The Conversation That Already Ended
· Unique Soul
I keep circling the same argument in my head. Changing what I should have said. Like it will change what happened.
It won’t. I know that. Knowing it doesn’t stop me from doing it anyway.
There’s a version of the conversation where I say the right thing at the right moment. Where I don’t freeze up. Where I say exactly what I meant instead of the smaller, safer thing that came out instead. In my head I can run that version as many times as I want. I can make myself sound calm. Sharp. Unbothered. None of that happened in real life. Real life happened once and it’s already over.
I think what I’m actually doing isn’t replaying the argument. I’m replaying the version of me who handled it better. That person doesn’t exist. She’s made up. I built her after the fact out of everything I wish I’d said, and now I compare myself to someone who was never real to begin with.
It’s strange how long a conversation can stay open in your head after it’s closed everywhere else. The other person has probably moved on. Maybe they don’t even remember it the way I do. Maybe they’ve forgotten it completely. Meanwhile I’m still in the room, still talking, still trying to win something that stopped being winnable the moment it ended.
I don’t think the goal is to stop caring what I said. I think the goal is to notice when I’m not actually processing anymore. When I’ve crossed over into rehearsing. One is trying to understand something. The other is just performing a version of myself that got to win.
Some conversations deserve a second look. Most of them just deserve to end.
